Video over IP thoughts

Apr 22, 2013Successful video conference for the American Heart Association Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. Med-Scene, L.L.C. provided video conferencing support to link to meetings’ evening and morning sessions between Baltimore in the United States, and Aldelaide, Australia. The session featured speaker presentations and panel discussion between the panelist and audiences at the two meeting locations.

For smaller meeting sessions and group presentations, using a video conference system – with transmission over the Internet (IP) – is a viable solution to link two distant locations. However, there are drawbacks and issues to contemplate.

First, even in the best of circumstances, video over IP cannot match the quality and low latency of full-bandwidth video over satellite or fiber optics. [Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!] Also, the time of day, and the day of the week a video conference occurs can greatly impact the quality of the transmission. During the business day, there is less bandwidth available. During the weekend is better also.

Video over IP – using a video conferencing system or H.264 encoding system – are a handy transmission medium. But you have to be aware of their limitations.
